MINDELO AND THE INTERIOR OF THE

In
the town of Mindelo, you will see the Town Market, National Handicrafts centre, Baía das
Gatas, Monte Verde, Calhau and Praia Grande.
São Vicente
is perhaps the most arid of the islands of the archipelago and the
landscape of the interior can be likened to a desert. However, Mindelo is
one of the most animated towns and the centre of Cape Verde
culture with its well-preserved colonial architecture and historic zone
with a reproduction of the Lisbon Tower of Belém. The bars and
cafeterias, some with live music, give the town a very cosmopolitan air.
It was in Mindelo that Cesária Évora initiated her career as a singer
and her permanent residence is on this very
Island
. The town market is one of the most modern in the country and has a
lively atmosphere.
The fruit and vegetables (and all the other kinds of products imaginable)
is in sharp contrast with the arid characteristics of the island. The
majority of products sold on the market come daily by boat from the Island
of
Santo Antão. Baía das Gatas is a famous beach, where one of the most important
African music festivals is held annually during the last week in August.
If
you dream of visiting a wild and uninhabited island and there is still
time, we can also arrange a boat excursion to the

Santa Luzia, the only uninhabited Cape Verde
Island
