Considered by many of the natives as the most beautiful, the Island of São Nicolau offers spectacular mountainous landscapes in a range which runs from north to south and another to the northwest with the peak Monte Gordo rising to 1,312m at the junction. There is a large semi-humid valley, Vale de Fajã, in between in which sugar cane and bananas are cultivated ion the lower slopes and maize and beans higher up. The scenery comes a close second to that of Santo Antão in scale and dramatic appeal.

The famous magical Dragon Tree grows abundantly on the higher northeasterly slopes, some to a height of ten metres.

Lovers of deep-sea fishing have chosen São Nicolau as the Island “par excellence” for their fishing trips. Various fishing clubs provide equipment and trips for all those who enjoy this sport, from the amateur to the professional.

Other points of interest on the Island are:

  1. Visit Tarrafal or Carriçal to witness the tuna industryat work, culminating in canning.

  2. Try one or more of the recommended hikes, there are six currently identified.

  3. Drive one of the most spectacular roads in Cape Verde , the 26kms between Ribeira Brava to Tarrafal. The route covers dramatic double bends at first followed by a gentle rise up the lush Faja Valley which is almost encircled by spiky mountains.

  4. Enjoy the attractive principal town, Ribeira Brava, admire the town square and it’s imposing Cathedral. Note the central Ribeira which is green all year round.

4WD hire is in short supply so book in advance.
