HALF-DAY TOUR OF PRAIA AND CIDADE VELHA  – €40 pp

Departing from the hotel about 9.30 a.m, we first visit the Sucupira market place, a bazaar of very strong African characteristics, and the town market in Plateau – the historic and commercial centre of the town.
We then move on to Cidade Velha, first capital of the Cape Verde islands and first European centre formed in the tropics. The old Ribeira Grande de Santiago is the cradle of Cape Verde culture and a living memory of the past.
You will see the ruins of the Cathedral that was destroyed by the cannons of that famous ‘pirate’ Sir Francis Drake and the Fortress, where slaves from the west coast of Africa were sold to buyers to be taken to south and Central American countries.

 

FULL-DAY TOUR OF THE ISLAND –  €85 pp (€60 pp for 4 pers)

Depart from the hotel about 9 a.m.to visit the interior of the island and places of major tourist interest. Santiago , as the most African of all the Cape Verde islands, offers the visitor unforgettable landscapes on this journey to the interior.

The excursion passes through São Domingos, São Jorge dos Orgãos –Grandvaux Barbosa National Botanical Gardens – Assomada, Santa Catarina – fruit market – Serra Malagueta, Chão Bom and Tarrafal.

There is time for a swim in the beautiful Tarrafal Bay, followed by lunch.

Returning to Cidade da Praia by the coast road you will see: Porto Formoso – coconut palms and sugar cane plantations – Manga das Sete Ribeiras – watermills – Santa Cruz – vast banana plantations, Pedra Badejo – fishing port and vast coconut Palm plantations.

An indication of the level of difficulty between 1 and 3 is offered as a guide only. 1 = Easy path with little fitness required. 2 = Medium fitness required, with some bursts of steep ascent and/or the odd slippery stretch. 3 = prolonged steep walking and/or slippery, uncobbled paths.
