HALF-DAY TOUR TO PORTO CAVALEIROS / SALINAS
€75 pp (€62 for 4 pers)

We begin with a visit to São Filipe, one of the prettiest Cape Verde towns and which through its preservation and patrimony is a candidate for a World Heritage site. In Porto Cavaleiros we see the strength of the sea, a port where even today boats are unable to anchor because of the agitated state of the sea.

Food and supplies for the inhabitants is carried by barges and sometimes they have to continue on their way without stopping –causing difficulties for the Islanders.

Three attempts have been made at building a protective wall, and three times the sea has destroyed it. The engineers never follow the advice of the fishermen and their techniques never manage to overcome the force of the sea!

We then go on to Salinas, a small fishing port in the middle of the black volcanic rock and where the sand, as with the majority of Fogo beaches, is an impressive volcanic black in colour. This is an excellent opportunity for taking photographs and a dip in the natural swimming pools carved out of the rocks by the sea.

FULL-DAY TOUR TO CHÃ DAS CALDEIRAS
 €90 pp (€60 for 4 pers)

Depart from the hotel about 8.30 a.m. The majority of visitors are of the opinion that this is the most impressive excursion and the one filled with the most beauty of all that are available in Cape Verde .

The 1700 metre climb to the crater of Chã das Caldeiras begins as soon as we leave São Filipe. From the start until we reach the summit it is just one unforgettable view after another. The ground grows darker as we climb, until we reach the crater of the volcano and see an almost lunar landscape, where the land, houses and sand are black, creating an unforgettable image in the mind.

The population of Chã das Caldeiras is timid and curious. Here you can quite often see the famous Creoles with blond hair and blue eyes... The volcanic eruptions do not make the natives leave the area. The last big eruption, in April 1995, destroyed almost all the houses, however the natives took shelter in the surrounding areas and when the eruption came to an end they returned to “their” Chã das Caldeiras!

We hold a picnic in a rustic crater house, with Fogo wine and cheese produced in this area, together with fried fish and local fruit.

For those who wish, and as long as we know beforehand, local guides can be contracted to organise a climb to the top of the volcano - Pico do Fogo (2829 metres). The climb takes from 2 ½ to 3 hours and the descent by the slippery volcanic sand, about 1½ hours. In Chã das Caldeiras you will have time to visit a Wine Producing Cooperative.
