The smallest inhabited Island of the archipelago, Brava (the Wild Island) is difficult to get to and seemingly more difficult to get away from due to weather conditions affecting the Ferry. Visit Brava only if you have plenty of time! The main town is Vila Nova Sintra and is within the crater at a height of 520m is attractive but often shrouded in mist. There are some interesting walks and attractive views.

We consider that there is generally no suitable accommodation on Brava for our clients but can arrange simple pension accommodation for Hikers.

Other small Islands

Santa Luzia – the smallest Island

Santa Luzia is the smallest of the Islands as opposed to Islets (Ilhéus) and is uninhabited. It is reachable in about 2 hours by chartered fishing boat from Calhau on São Vicente.

Ilhéu Raso – famous for some inhabitants

Literally a rock of 7 sq kms, this Islet is the home of the small brown but one of the rarest birds in the world, the Raso Lark but is otherwise uninhabited.

Ilhéu Branco – home to seabirds.

Less than half the size of Raso, Branco is the home of many breeds of sea birds and is white from their guano deposits.
