FULL-DAY TRIP AROUND THE ISLAND €60 pp (€47.50 if 4 pers) Depart from the hotel about 9 a.m. Passing through Sal Rei, the capital town of the Island and following the Via Pitoresca (Picturesque Route) – enclosed area of tropical vegetation containing thousands of coconut and date palms – to the Praia da Chave, a beautiful bay where we stop for your first swim of the day in the sea. The landscape is dominated by the ruins of an old ceramics factory, with the much photographed brick chimney still standing tall! We then move on to Rabil and Alto da Boaventua where we visit a traditional pottery factory. Next, we leave for the ‘obligatory’ Santa Mónica beach, passing through the village of Povoação Velha. A rather bumpy and uncomfortable country road leads us to the most famous of Boavista beaches, more than 40 km in length and still completely as Mother Nature made it. We return to Rabil for lunch at the Restaurant Sodade de Nha Terra, a pleasant surprise in a place which seems to have got lost in the desert, the owner of which is Caboverdean who spent many years in Switzerland where he worked as a chef in a famous hotel. He will surprise you with delicious local recipes including his famous goat and lobster dishes! After lunch we take a trip out into the Viana Desert , where you can see endless and permanently changing dunes and where the white tones of moving sand provide a surprising end to this excursion o the Island of Dunes. Activities Hiking We have documented itineraries for the following hikes – please ask. Sal Rei – Estoril Beach – Rabil Lagoon – Estância de Baixo – Rabil 10 Kms, time 3 hours, difficulty 1 Sal Rei – Wreck of Santa Maria – Sal Rei 14 Kms, time 4½ hours, difficulty 1 An indication of the level of difficulty between 1 and 3 is offered as a guide only. 1 = Easy path with little fitness required. 2 = Medium fitness required, with some bursts of steep ascent and/or the odd slippery stretch. 3 = prolonged steep walking and/or slippery, uncobbled paths.
